As a serial entrepreneur, I have been the go-to source when it comes to holistic health, longevity, anti-aging, functional fitness and fat loss. I was too tired to go out with my friends at night. I was even embarrassed to go out on weekends by myself. I had lower back pain and high inflammation. Just the thought of stepping inside a gym made my heart skip a beat. I sweat when I ate. I wore anything loose that would hang straight down and wouldn't cling. I wasn't just 'overweight.' I was obese. I weighed nearly 250 pounds.
I went to many doctors, dietitians and nutritionists for help. Nothing worked. They kept telling me to cut calories and exercise more. I would lose some weight and gain it all back. I tried 7 different diets. One by one. And I failed at all of them.
My health mentors listened carefully and recommended an entirely different approach. This wasn't a 'diet.' It was a unique way to mimic our ancestors, called diet variation. It's based on cutting edge research that shows perfect health is when we can get in and out of ketosis, vary our diet, and implement fasting.
The truth is that all diets work, just not longterm. Most programs fail because they attempt to help you to lose weight in order to get healthy. They have it completely backwards. We get healthy to lose weight. Nobody has a weight problem, they have a hormone and metabolism problem; a symptom is weight gain. When we mimic our ancestral patterns, and start using fat as our primary fuel source, our hormones and metabolism become healthier; a side effect is weight loss.
I started my health transformation in 2008, nine months after that I went from 250 pounds to 170 pounds. I went from 34% body fat to 6% body fat. I carved out six pack abs. Most importantly, I achieved a mental six pack.
It sucked at first. I started eating clean foods for the first time in my life, and began exercising with achy joints. I was sore for days. It sucked. I said no to tempting foods. It sucked. Here's the formula for success. Suck. Suck. Success. I embraced the suck. I stayed with it, and to me it was a miracle. This was the first time in my life I'd ever lost weight and kept it off!
The reason the program worked was simple: I taught my body to burn fat for fuel.
I could skip a meal and be completely fine because I taught my body to have metabolic flexibility. I stopped counting calories or macros. This is the natural way your body was designed to be. Eating every 3 hours is one of the worst things you can do for your health. It's not about eating less, it's about eating less often.
My energy levels are sky high which allows me to be more efficient in all areas of my life. I have energy for my friends and family. I have mental clarity for my businesses.
How can you skip meals and not go into starvation mode?
The secret is switching from being a sugar burner to a fat burner. Our entire lives, we’ve been told that the primary source of energy in the body is carbohydrates or glucose. This has been proven false. Ketones are an alternative fuel source under certain conditions. Ketones are produced when the body is burning fats. If you consider the caveman days, if we only had glucose to run our bodies on, we would all have been dead long ago because the glucose reserve would only last 48 hours or less. The goal is to switch our body from sugar fuel to fat fuel.
Our factory setting from birth is to be really good at burning fat. Another interesting point is as a baby, we all ran on ketones if we were breast fed. Now, most mothers have switched to giving their babies the carbo-induced, sugary infant formula. This changed the scenario overnight. We therefore take this wonderful body that is designed to thrive (perfect health), and we never gave it a chance to burn fat.
